HOUSTON -- Gregorio Petits wife Yessica didnt come to Friday nights game because she had a headache. She thoroughly regretted her decision after Petit hit his first career home run to help the Houston Astros to a 3-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. The homer put Houston on top in the eighth inning and the Astros held on for the victory, snapping Torontos six-game winning streak. "My wife is mad because she didnt come to the game," Petit said. "I got like seven messages, all smiling faces. It wasnt really smiling, but crying faces all over in my phone. (She said) I wont forgive myself for this. I missed the first one. He tried to console her. "Its OK," he said he told her. "You could YouTube it." The game was tied at 1-1 when Petit launched Aaron Loups first pitch into the first row of the Crawford Boxes in left field to give the Astros the lead. Jose Altuve connected on the next pitch by Loup (3-3) for a ground-rule double before stealing third base. "I threw two pitches and the next thing you know I give up a home run and a double," Loup said. "I guess it just wasnt my day today." Houston got an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Robbie Grossman. Jose Veras (1-1) got the last two outs of the eighth inning for the win and Chad Qualls threw a scoreless ninth for his 12th save. Melky Cabrera singled with one out in the first and reached third on a single by Jose Bautista that crashed off the wall in left field and knocked a number out of the scoreboard there. The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Dioner Navarro. Toronto starter J.A. Happ gave up three hits and one run with six strikeouts in seven innings. Happ retired the first 11 batters he faced before Chris Carter singled on a dribbler with two outs in the fourth inning. Matt Dominguez drew a walk before Carter scored on a single by Guzman to tie it at 1-1. Houston starter Collin McHugh did not factor into the decision after allowing five hits and a run in 6 1-3 innings to remain winless since June 3. Jake Marisnick, acquired Thursday from the Marlins as part of a six-player deal that sent right-hander Jarred Cosart to Miami, went 0 for 3 in his Houston debut. MOUND WORK The game was delayed in the third inning when the Astros complained about the mound being too soft. Three members of the grounds crew came onto the field with rakes and other tools and worked on it for several minutes. McHugh threw a few warmups pitches after they finished and the crowd cheered as the workers walked off the field and the game continued. SPELLING TEST? The Astros had a bit of fun teasing rookie pitcher Mike Foltynewicz about his difficult to spell last name on his first day in the clubhouse after being called up from Triple-A on Friday. They used tape to spell his name phonetically (Fultynevichz) and affix it to the nameplate above his locker. He got a good laugh out of the ribbing and said theres no trick he can give them to help make spelling it easier. "I had trouble when I was younger, too," he said. "I dont think anybodys going to really get it right ... they can just keep it nice and short and call me Folty." TRAINERS ROOM Blue Jays: Infielder Brett Lawrie (broken right index finger) began a rehabilitation assignment with Class A Dunedin on Friday. Manager John Gibbons said he will probably need at least a week of rehab games before hes ready to return to the team. Astros: Rookie OF George Springer, on the disabled list since July 20 with strained left quadriceps, is inching closer to his return. "Hes taking batting practice," manager Bo Porter said. "He was able to do the outfield work (Friday). So were pretty excited that hes coming along well." Guzman left the game after the fourth inning with back spasms. He was replaced at 1B by Jon Singleton. ON DECK Torontos R.A. Dickey looks for his third straight win when he opposes left-hander Brett Oberholtzer when the series continues on Saturday. Oberholtzer is coming off a win over the As when he allowed three runs in 6 2-3 innings. It might be one edge that Green Bay could have ahead of Sundays playoff game against the warm-weather Dallas Cowboys at Lambeau Field.Ball security is at a premium in the playoffs. Receivers — and the defensive backs trying to snare interceptions — must be prepared for the sting that comes with trying to catch a cold ball.I think whoever handles the ball best in the cold is going to come up on top. I think we definitely have the advantage, Packers cornerback and special teams ace Jarrett Bush said.At the same time, it is football, and youve got to line up and prove it between the white lines. The forecast Sunday calls for partly cloudy skies with highs in the low 20s. Thats downright balmy compared to the arctic front that encased Green Bay at midweek, when temperatures hovered near zero.To top it off, a snowstorm that was supposed to dump 3 to 4 inches of snow on the area started just before practice began Thursday, forcing McCarthy to move the team indoors for the whole session. It warmed up, but only slightly, which was fine by McCarthy. The Packers were even able to get the temperature inside the facility to about 22 degrees, which would be roughly the high temperature for Sunday.I feel like we got done what we needed to get done these two days, McCarthy said. We were able to get the wind direction changed, so we felt like it was pretty close to what the conditions will be that were playing in on Sunday.Though not nearly as cold as when the teams last met in Green Bay in the post-season — the 1967 NFL championship dubbed the Ice Bowl after being played in brutally cold conditions. It was minus 13 for that game at kickoff. Its not supposed to be that chilly this weekend, though its not exactly weather familiar to some Cowboys, either.According to STATS, the Cowboys are 11-13 since 1991 in games played in with the temperature lower than 40 degrees.dddddddddddd Their most recent game in that category: Dec. 4, when Dallas beat Chicago 41-28 at Soldier Field. It comes down to what is your resistance to the cold, how much can you tolerate it, Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr said. This game, this time of the season, get comfortable. ... Just be comfortable to be at your best. For defensive end Jeremy Mincey, that means sticking with his usual routine of wearing sleeves.Packers guard T.J. Lang said hes going with extra-long elbow sleeves, while receiver Davante Adams is going with bare arms.No sleeves. Never sleeves, the Packers rookie said. Yeah, we dont wear sleeves in the wideout room. But there is more to preparation than making fashion choices.Carr said its important to be fast and light. He wants to stay warm without wearing too many layers. Hell check the condition of the heated field before the game for footing.Bring multiple pairs of clears out, detachables, nubs, long studs, short studs, whatever, Carr said. Just check the field and the footing and see if its soft or it can hold up to up to the studs.Dallas, 8-0 on the road this season, clearly plays well away from home no matter the conditions. McCarthy downplayed any talk of having a cold-weather advantage.I think footballs football. Im not counting the weather, he said. One Cowboy familiar with Midwest winters is quarterback Tony Romo, who grew up in Burlington, in southeastern Wisconsin, and played college ball at Eastern Illinois.Romo is 3-5 as a starter in games played when the temperature dipped below 40. Dont forget that the Cowboys also play in cold weather late in the season if they have road games against NFC East rivals New York, Philadelphia and Washington. It can affect you if you havent played in it before and if youre not prepared, Romo said. For us, well just put our head down and go to work, like we always do.___Online: http://pro32.ap.org/poll and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL___AP Sports Writer Schuyler Dixon in Dallas contributed to this report.___Online: http://pro32.ap.org/poll and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
